Our Toddler Program – 16 months- 3 years
Dr. Maria Montessori compared the young child’s mind to a sponge because the child absorbs information from his/her immediate environment. Toddler children learn by doing and at HMS the child is given every opportunity to experience the world “hands on”. Our program allows children to see and explore the world through their senses.
The toddler children are encouraged to act upon their natural curiosity and touch and handle and explore their surroundings. The toddler environment provides a wide variety of materials and lessons to cater to the limited attention span of a toddler child. The children are given freedom, with limits, to select the activities that satisfy their needs. Independence is encouraged in the toddler classroom. Toddlers want to be given the opportunity to try things for themselves. When the teacher is needed, she is there, but when the child can do it him/herself, the teacher steps back.
The toddler environment is child sized. It is prepared to be convenient for the child. It is a place for children to feel safe and at home. It is the adult’s aim to remove obstacles that cause frustration by having materials and lessons at eye level and tables and furnishings toddler sized.
Our Toddler teachers have a unique appreciation for the unexpected rhythm that can occur in the Toddler classroom. They support the children’s unfolding sense of self and their learning and understanding of the world they live in and welcome each child’s growing sense of curiosity and independence.
